FREEDOM & SLAVES

I wonder if we will evolve as people,

Stop casting others down so we can rise,

Stop building our societies upon a graveyard of slaves.

Slaves no longer on ships but in sweatshops,

Slaves no longer in chains but in handcuffs,

Slaves no longer subhuman but subclass.

Their identities exist in the aisles,

Their lives are bought in the shops,

Their existence, their worth.

Freedom is a funny thing,

For those lucky to have it,

It’s as water to a fish,

So ubiquitous we forget it’s there.

We lose sight of it’s meaning,

We overlook it’s value,

We disregard it’s importance.

These wonders consume my thoughts.

It fills me with dread,

To dig deep and call on my humanity,

To beg the world for change.
